How to convert oven recipes for an air fryer
An air fryer is a small convection oven: a powerful fan circulates hot air around the food in a compact chamber, so food browns and cooks faster than in a conventional oven. The standard rule is simple – lower the temperature by about 25 °F (15 °C) and cut the time by about 20 %. Fries and frozen snacks often need even less time; dense baked goods need a gentler approach.
Air fryer temp ≈ oven temp − 25 °F · Air fryer time ≈ oven time × 0.75 – 0.8
Common conversions
| Oven | Air fryer | Example |
| 425 °F · 25 min | 400 °F · 18 – 20 min | Frozen fries, potato wedges |

| 400 °F · 20 min | 375 °F · 12 – 15 min | Salmon fillets |
| 375 °F · 25 min | 350 °F · 18 – 20 min | Roasted vegetables |
| 350 °F · 25 min | 325 °F · 18 – 20 min | Muffins, small cakes |
What size air fryer do you need?
Air fryer capacity is quoted in quarts or liters, but what matters is the floor area of the basket, because food crisps best in a single layer. As a rough guide, a basket holds about a quarter of a pound of fries per quart in one layer.
| Household | Size | Type |
| 1 – 2 people | 2 – 4 qt (2 – 4 L) | Compact basket |
| 3 – 4 people | 4 – 6 qt (4 – 6 L) | Standard basket |
| 5 – 6 people | 6 – 8 qt | Large basket or dual-basket |
| 6 + people | 8 – 10 qt | Dual-basket or air fryer oven |
Dual-basket models cook two foods at different settings and finish them together. Air fryer ovens have shelves for larger batches and can also toast, bake and dehydrate, but they take more counter space.
Energy: air fryer vs oven
An air fryer draws 1,400 – 1,800 W, similar to or less than an oven element, but it heats a much smaller space, needs little or no preheating and cooks faster. For small portions this typically uses half or less of the energy of a full-size oven. For large family meals that need several batches, the oven can be just as efficient.
Tips for better results
- Don't overcrowd the basket – cook in batches and keep finished food warm.
- Lightly oil vegetables and homemade fries for better browning.
- Shake or flip halfway through cooking.
- Use a meat thermometer: 165 °F (74 °C) for poultry, 145 °F (63 °C) plus rest for whole cuts of pork and beef, 160 °F (71 °C) for ground meat.
- Clean the basket and drawer after each use to avoid smoke from old grease.
Features worth paying for
- A wide, flat basket rather than a tall, narrow one.
- Non-toxic, dishwasher-safe coatings or stainless baskets.
- A window and interior light to check browning without opening.
- Accurate temperature control in 5 – 10 °F steps up to 400 °F.
- Dual zones with "match" and "sync finish" functions for families.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert oven time to air fryer time?
Reduce the temperature by about 25 °F (15 °C) and the time by about 20 %, then check early. Fries and frozen snacks often need about 25 % less time.
What size air fryer do I need for a family of four?
A 5 – 6 quart basket or a dual-basket model around 8 quarts works well for most families of four.
Does an air fryer use less electricity than an oven?
For small and medium portions, usually yes – often less than half, because it heats a smaller space quickly and needs little preheating.
Do I need to preheat an air fryer?
Many models need only 2 – 3 minutes or none at all. A short preheat helps with crispy foods and baked goods.
Can I use foil or parchment in an air fryer?
Yes, if it is weighed down by food and doesn't block airflow. Never put loose paper in a preheating air fryer.
About CrispCalc
CrispCalc is an independent, free calculator for home cooks using or buying air fryers. Conversions follow widely used rules of thumb; always check food is cooked through. We are not affiliated with any appliance brand.
Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.
The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
